Alibone, Earls Barton, Northamptonshire

Project name:
Materials Recycling Facility
Project location:
Earls Barton
Project type:
Development of a building to house waste processing in a sensitive rural environment
Client :
Alibone Recycling
Description:
GP Planning Ltd were commissioned by Alibone Recycling to help them design a site layout and building to house waste processing operations and to meet concerns from local residents and the County Council, who were initially opposed to the development, surrounded as it is by the attractive landscapes of the Nene Valley. Against an initial position of opposition to any development, we researched various sites of equal sensitivity to find a design solution, and arrived at the idea of a green ‘living’ roof on a building which would house the entire processing activities on the site. Inspired by the Adnam’s Brewery in Suffolk, the project created one of the largest commercial buildings with a sedum roof. The planting varies in colour with the seasons, and gives the impression of a large field of flowers, blending the building into the landscape, and creating significant refuge for wildlife and biodiversity. The project has created an iconic yet subtle building, and provides one of the smartest sites for waste management in the County.

Long Buckby Grain Store,
Long Buckby, Northamptonshire

Project name:
Long Buckby Grain Store
Project location:
Long Buckby, Northamptonshire Project type: Planning Application for Additional Grain Silos
Client:
Charles Jackson & Co Ltd
Description:
A planning application was prepared for 12 new grain storage silos at an existing grain store, to double the storage capacity at the facility. This involved a detailed assessment of the traffic impacts on the local highway network and of the landscape and visual impact. The proposals were illustrated using images of the development, derived from a Sketchup model of the whole site with the addition of the new structures. Local objections to heavy traffic through the village were addressed by agreeing to a condition requiring all traffic to turn right out of the site.
